For some reason blogger keeps smooshing all my paragraphs together I am sorry.
This is Kitchen Question here at Pioneer Homemaker today. I know I did this last week as well but you know when you have a question....
First explain why I have this question. About 4 years ago I lost 40 lbs by cutting back on sugar, simple carbs, and eating lots of vegies. Then the "storm" came (Katrina for all those not on the Gulf Coast) and we went back to eating like we did before which was OK homemade breads etc. But I was feeling awful achy, retaining water, sugar hangovers, stiff joints, etc.
So last year I stopped all sugar, diet sodas, white breads etc for a week and lost 7 lbs. BOOM it was gone and I didn't gain it back after I fell off the "wagon" and I felt awesome no bad taste in my mouth, no sugar hangovers. So in March after our vacation I started up again and lost 25 lbs. But yet again I am off the wagon. I know I have no self control or will power LOL.
But for a week now I have had no cookies and thats hard with Christmas and cookies everywhere, no diet sodas, and I have gone to 2 Christmas parties and nothing sweets wise for me. Just water with lemon or herb teas (no black tea). I have eaten bread and pasta, foods with sugar in them but not with sugar in overabundance. I feel great yesterday I split a soda with the kids though when we went to town and by the time I got home I was dizzy it was a regular soda.
So I know splenda, fake sugar (aspertem sp?) stuff like that aren't good for you and believe me I can feel it on those within 10 to 15 minutes of eating them my leg joints hurt the nerves in my legs are on fire, I get dizzy, severly moody sometimes, and the very bad taste in my mouth pops up almost as soon as the offending product touches my tongue.
These reactions seem to get worse as I get older but saving money and curving how you eat doesnt always go hand in hand.
So now the question if you have this reaction what do you do to help yourself? If you dont but you cut sugar, splenda, fake sugar, and white flour from your diet what do you use. I love making 100% whole wheat bread for me it bothers hubbies stomach but honey and molasses bother me to not as much as the above but enough. And with kids one who is VERY picky it is hard to and expensive to make what I need and what he will eat
So any and all suggestions please leave a comment or email me pioneerhomemaker @ bellsouth.net remove spaces. Any links you have on info on these offending products would help as well insights on why this happens or am I the only lunatic in the world with this problem.

I don't have any tips or ideas for you. I'm sorry. I'm going to try to cut back on my sugar consumption, though, after the holidays are over.

Hi Erika. No, you're not crazy LOL! The reason you react so badly to splenda, nutrasweet, etc. is the endocrine stress it causes in your body. I've realized that the diet cokes I drink all day are the biggest part of my problem (aching joints, etc.) and yes, it does get worse as we get older. The"sugar hangover" when you eat the real stuff is as bad or worse. Sorry I can't help you with a bread that everyone in your family can and will eat. I use molasses or applesauce for sweeteners in baking, but it's a hit-or-miss proposition. Liz in Gulfport
I find that more natural sugars do not bother me as much as refined sugars. I use maple syrup, honey, molasses, agave nectar, concentrated fruit sweetener, etc as much as possible. For bread, I find that barley malt works great as a sweetener.
For sweetener alternatives that are natural, you can try xylitol or stevia.
Hello Liz In Gulfport I hope this is the same liz I know in Gulfport LOL. Very nice to "see" you here.
I love stevia and Honey and molasses I use alot but again honey can give me the hangover as well.
I guess I have to face I am getting older no I am not old but if another 20 something year old says I am I might....well we won't go there.
I have had 3 20 somethings tell me I was at 34 I am sorry but no way am I old. My mom at 57 isnt by any means either and my 91 yr old grandmother is a powerhouse for her age and isnt either. Old age is a state of mind.

I generally use honey, as we find that it affects us less than using sugar. Molasses is a staple as well.
I use a lot of fruit puree, such as apple sauce, or mushed bananas, in recipes to replace sweetener, and also sometimes 100% juice frozen concentrates (apple, orange, grape all work well). Also pineapple, sweet potato and carrots work well in some sweet breads and muffins. And adding real vanilla and a sweet spice like cinnamon can add more sweetness to baking.
Stevia was already mentioned- it is a great sweetener alternative. I use it to make lemonade, and also in my coffee and teas, and sometimes smoothies. While on a complete no-sugar diet (no honey or anything), I used Stevia in some baking and puddings, etc. and it worked just fine. It just has a slightly different taste so you have to get used to it, and you also need to learn how to adjust your recipes for using it.
If you google for candida diet recipes, you will likely find recipes for sweets using stevia.

Erika,
you are not crazy let me assure you. I feel the same way. Maybe I can give you some suggestions- instead of whole wheat for hubby try KAMUT flour (or grain) or Spelt. Both of those, especially spelt are good for wheat intolerance, and much healthier. Also try raw honey or SUCANAT for a sweetener, you can even try using fructose. All of those are natural and taste great. Hope this may help.

Wow - I have the same problem with the achy joints and all when I drink a lot of Diet Coke. I have been doing well with cutting back. Here something that will help. I got food poisoning a year ago. I have not felt good since then - I finally went into the doctor and found out that the bacteria had settled in my liver. The doctor told me that it was because my liver was stressed with all the diet coke - and made it suseptable to the infection. UG. I have been using honey for sweetner. Same calories as sugar - but not refined. I am not a big sweet eater - so it has not been too hard. GOod luck .
Blessings,
~Jane
