My question this week is: What is the lowest you will go on a food item? Like ground beef during the summer goes for 99 cents a lb that isn't the leanest but that is a good price for here.
I know if I keep track of sale prices in a pricebook that will help me gauge what the lowest is and how often they do that low price. But lets face it that is one more thing I would have to keep up with and write down etc. And simplified is my goal this year.
So I want to know what is your rock bottom what would you consider a good deal pricewise on meats, staples, etc.
And what cuts of meat do you consider always a good deal?

I like to buy my beef in bulk at the butcher shop. You can usually buy a whole, half, split half, and sometimes a quarter of a beef for about 2.05 a pound (around here) and you get ground beef, steaks, roasts, soup bones and more. I figure the price evens itself out to be cheaper than the supermarket, because you are getting more expensive cuts, like roast and steak, for a cheap price and the burger is a little higher than you would pay. The meat is also SO much better tasting! Some fish is a good deal anytime- like pollock. Our grocery store rarely has good deals on anything besides ground beef ( I don't live near any big stores like Sams club, Walmart, or Krogers) and that is usually red on the outside and brown in the middle. Yuck!
Well, I like the idea of buying half a cow, as the previous poster stated it is cheaper overall when you average the price out for all the different cuts. I have yet to look into that route though.
Having said that, $1.99 is the most I like to pay for boneless skinless chicken breasts
pork loin goes on sale for as little as $1.77
ground chuck (bit better then regular ground meat) has not been better then $1.99 since the one grocery chain closed.
Someone once said no more then .10/pound was her guide for any food- meat, veggies, junk food, etc. but I don't think we have prices that are as good as hers and that was a few years ago as well.
Keep a price book and you will figure it out soon enough. There is a pattern as to when some things go on sale as well.
I am looking into buying bulk beef from the butcher, but meanwhile I can usually get the leanest ground beef at Sam's Club for $1.89. Their boneless chicken breast are inexpesive, can't remember price though. However, the best bet is when Kroger or Bilo have their buy one get one on Boneless Breasts.
I don't buy roasts or loins too often to remember pricing.
