I like soy milk my body prefers soy milk over cows milk. I am not a big milk drinker but I love soy shakes. So with the price of everything going up I wanted to just like with everything else figure out how to make it on my own . I knew I could but could I make it without a fancy machine and the answer is a big YES!
Needed
blender or hand blender
bowl
soy beans ( I bought organic from Azure Standard)
pot
colander
and somethng like a pillowcase or cheese clothe.
First soak your beans overnight like you would any dry bean
In the morning drain them off if using a blender dump your beans and 2 cups fresh water into it and puree. If like I did above using a hand blender drain off beans add 2 cups fresh water and puree.
While you are doing this bring 6 cups of water to a boil on the stove. Use a big pot.
Pour in your soy bean puree. Now stir over moderate heat till it froths when it froths it will do it fast and go up and out of the pot if your are not stirring. Once it froths you turn it down and let it simmer for 10 minutes. This is a must and has to be done. Soy has a trypsin inhibitor in it by cooking it for 10 minutes you are deactivating this inhibitor. You want this since trypsin helps you digest protein you don't want this enzyme inhibited.
Next I use a big plastic bowl a strainer and a pillow case. It is washed with natural laundry soap and is 100% cotton. Yes it is bright pink but that makes it fun. I use a pillow case for this and making ricotta because it is easier to pour it in a bag than a big flat piece of fabric. You pour the hot beans and milk into the pillowcase and strainer so it drains into the bowl. Once its drained give it a pretty good squeeze to get the rest of the liquid out this is very hot! Pour 2 cups of cold water over beans (Okara) and squeeze again. Now you have soy milk in the bowl put in jars and put in fridge will last a week. The beans you can toss make patties out of etc. I feed them to my chickens they love them. You can now make tofu with your milk or whatever you want and have the desire to try!

Thanks so much for this tip! I was considering buying a machine, but wasn't sure I'd like the taste of homemade soy milk. This way, I could taste it without buying, and see what I think! Have you ever tried to make rice milk this way? I'd imagine it would be done the same way?
Hi Erika...
I was getting worried about you...since you weren't on here for such a long time! Glad you're ok.
About the soy milk....what about the taste? I love ice cold skim milk. I drink a big glass every night before I go to bed. And it just has to be ICE cold.
I know I should try the soy milk, but I'm a big ninny and haven't. I did buy it a few times at the grocery, but my husband ended up using it in his coffee.
I can't wait for April to get here, so I can get some new little chicks. Your chickens look beautiful. I have been missing mine, but I am going to get a dozen or so soon.
I too am getting the gardening bug. I think you're just a little bit ahead of us, being a little bit further south. I did buy 6 little tomatoe plants this week and have put them out with those water wall things over them. They do really well when covered in those things. I can't wait to start the squash, cukes, cantelopes, tomatoes, and peppers. All my brassica's are starting to bolt and make flowers/seeds. But I did get some nice messes of collards, brussel sprouts, brocolli, and cabbages. Now I want summer veggies.
Do you know where in your town, that I could find some Muscadine vines? I love to go to the MSU experimental station down there. My son loves muscadines. Our old vines have just died off and it's just time to put out new ones. Do y'all have any good feed stores or garden centers down there? My dad went to Purvis to a great garden center, and I want to go there too this week. I also like a store up in Laurel.
Well, like I said....glad to see you back on here! Hope you have a great week.....
Hope you get to get out there and dig in your dirt! That's what I am looking forward to!
talk to you later...
Debbie
Debbie,
We are close to wiggins poplarville and lumberton and I am sad to say that those towns don't have much:0(
There is a nice looking feed store in lumberton just off 59 and I noticed yesterday when I was there a store right off the highway is selling lots of trees I think fruit trees.
I haven't seen grapes though hubby goes to the feed store for me now so I am not sure about the new one we go to but the old one in downtown wiggins has some stuff but they aren't that nice of a a place. Hence why we switched. But I still go there and buy bulk seeds and chicks.
I can't wait till we come back from our little weekend trip I want to get poults and maybe some little hens. But definately turkeys.
I am getting that garden itch to right after christmas was over it started and I have been miserable waiting for it. I did plant cool crops but they all froze so I am trying again but I think its to late. Oh well. I love summer stuff more.
